Warning signs
- Betting more than you planned — or chasing losses to "get even".
- Borrowing money, selling things, or dipping into bills to bet.
- Lying to people close to you about how much you wager.
- Betting to escape stress, boredom, anxiety or depression.
- Needing bigger bets to feel the same rush.
- Can't stop, cut back, or take a break even when you want to.
If two or more of those sound familiar, treat it seriously — not someday, today.
Rules that keep it fun
- A hard bankroll, in dollars, per month — written down before you bet. When it's gone, you're done until next month.
- 1–2% stakes. Flat bet sizing removes the emotion from every decision. (See the bankroll guide.)
- Never chase. Doubling down after losses is the fastest documented route to ruin.
- Never bet drunk, tilted, or desperate. If you're emotional, the apps can wait.
- Set the sportsbook's own limits — every legal book offers deposit, wager and time limits. Use them before you need them.
- Track every bet. Most losing bettors have no idea they're losing. A spreadsheet doesn't lie.
Tools that help
- Deposit / loss / time limits — in every legal sportsbook's responsible-gaming settings.
- Cool-off periods — 24 hours to 30 days locked out, self-serve.
- State self-exclusion lists — voluntary bans from 1 year to lifetime; search "[your state] self-exclusion".
- GamBan / blocking software — blocks gambling sites and apps across your devices.
